Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2018 website

20 September 2017

We've been a bit quiet with blog posts recently: we've been busy! We're very excited to be launching a new website today which we've been working on over the last couple of months.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting happens every two years, and each time is in a different country of the Commonwealth. The last time was in Malta, and the next meeting is in London.

After a competitive tendering process Big Blue Door were selected to design, build, and support the website, from the Prime Minister's announcement on the 19th September through to the Meeting in April 2018 and beyond. The project has been an exciting build for us, and involves key stakeholders from the Cabinet Office, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, and also Royal representatives from the Palace.

The website was designed in-house by Big Blue Door's design team, with a fully-responsive template. The vibrant design is implemented with Drupal 7 as the Content Management System: there are many aspects to the site which will be added over the coming months and during the summit itself, so the platform has to support a modular build. Our experience of building Drupal websites is perfect for this approach.

Big Blue Door have also designed and built the secure hosting environment for this website to be highly-available through the use of load-balancing, as well as high-performance regional caching using a global Content Delivery Network. In addition, we've configured an auto-scaling policy, whereby new servers are automatically provisioned, installed, and added into the load-balancer to respond to demand. All data is stored in UK data centres, using the London availability zones with Amazon Web Services

We're excited to be working on this project and look forward to the many updates over the coming months leading up to the Summit in April 2018.
