Grenfell Inquiry website

19 April 2018

Working alongside hosting company Digital Craftsmen, Big Blue Door has developed and recently launched the website for the Grenfell Tower Inquiry.

The Inquiry is an independent public inquiry, set up to examine the circumstances leading up to and surrounding the fire at Grenfell Tower. The purpose of the website is to keep the public and other interested parties informed of all developments, as they happen, through the publication of documentary evidence relating to the Inquiry, as well as the live streaming of the Inquiry hearing itself. The Inquiry team estimate that up to 400,000 documents will be submitted and available to the public through the website.

We took a design-light approach to reflect the solemnity of the Inquiry, focusing instead on functionality and ease-of-use. Using Drupal 8 and Solr to facilitate search, we built a document repository that allows users to search evidence and other supporting documentation using free text searches and tags agreed with the Inquiry team. The whole site adheres to WCAG 2.0 accessibility guidelines and includes a toolbar to adjust contrast and font size at the click of a mouse.

The website employs a Virtual Private Cloud designed and built by Digital Craftsmen, with load-balancing and Cloudflare for global content delivery, to facilitate the anticipated large usage spikes that will follow important developments in the Inquiry.
